American Film Institute have released their picks for top 10 movies and TV shows of 2019, highlighting some films in contention during the award season.

Now in its 20th year, the annual AFI Awards for film focuses on American-made films deemed culturally significant, and includes a diverse list of films such as Martin Scorsese’s epic crime film The Irishman, and Todd Phillips’ comicbook psychological thriller Joker.

Another Oscar contender, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, took the AFI’s special award.

AFI’s annual list is historically a strong predictor of the Academy’s Best Picture category. Last year, five films landed on both lists, including A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Black Panther, The Favourite, as well as eventual Oscar Best Picture winner Green Book.
