Tyrese Gibson is said to be joining the cast of Sony’s upcoming comic book film “Morbius,” Variety reveals.
He will be joining Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, Blade Runner 2049), who is set to play the title role. Also expected to be in the film are Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, and Jared Harris. Recently Jared Leto shared on instagram that filming has already begun.
Just like last year’s “Venom,” “Morbius” is a Spider-Man spinoff. Daniel Espinosa of Safe House is attached to direct with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless set to write the script. The character first appeared in 1971 in The Amazing Spider-Man #101.”
In the comic Michael Morbius is a biochemist who is searching for a cure to his rare blood disorder, who in the process gets vampiric super human abilities after a failed experiment.
“Venom”, which starred Tom Hardy playing the title character, was a surprise global hit for Sony Pictures, grossing $855 million globally, so it only makes sense that Sony is moving full steam ahead with the production of Morbius.
Gibson is best known for his role as Roman Pearce in the Fast and the Furious film franchise as well as Robert Epps in the Transformers film series. He is next to be seen in later this year in the drama film “Black and Blue.”
The film is currently slated for a July 31, 2020 release.
