New Trailer for “Mary Queen of Scots” Released

By Creative Media Times

Focus Features

Saoirse Ronan is Mary and Margot Robbie is Elizabeth and they are rivals in power in this December’s “Mary Queen of Scots.” Today, Focus Features has released a brand new trailer, giving us a first look at what the film has in store.

The 16th century historical drama is directed by Josie Rourke and written by Beau Willimon, and is based on “My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots” by British historian and biographer John Guy.

Along with some beautiful cinematography and sweeping vistas of England and Scotland, the trailer shows plenty of confrontations between the two rivals, try as they may to say otherwise.

“My dear Queen Elizabeth, I hope we might meet in person so that I may embrace you,” Mary says in the trailer. “But ruling side by side, we must do so in harmony, not through a treaty drafted by men lesser than ourselves.” To which Robbie’s Queen Elizabeth I replies: “My dear cousin, let our nations cherish each other as we would. Two kingdoms unite.”

Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie were both academy award nominees earlier this year: Ronan for the coming-of-age film “Lady Bird” and Robbie as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.”

The movie also stars Brendan Coyle, David Tennant, Joe Alwyn, Guy Pearce and Martin Compston. Mary, Queen of Scots is set to hit theaters on Dec. 7.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

“Mary Queen of Scots” explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.

Dinosaurs are not going extinct soon, at least at the box-office, as Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom crosses the one billion dollar mark at the global box-office.

The Chris Pratt-starred sequel to Jurassic World crossed the mark on Thursday, $304m of it it made domestically, where it is still number one at the box-office. The Universal/Amblin Entertainment film still has to open in Japan on July 13.

With this feat, Universal joins Disney as the only studios to have two films in three different franchise films to reach $1billion. In Universal’s case, apart from the two Jurassic World films, it also includes two films from The Fast And Furious Franchise (Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious) and two from the Despicable Me franchise (Despicable Me 3 and Minions).

2015’s “Jurassic World,” ended its box-office run with $1.7 billion, which at the time was third in all time list, just below two of James Cameron’s juggernauts Avatar and Titanic.

Directed by J.A. Bayona, ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ had a staggered release pattern, first opening mostly in Europe and Asia on June 6 ahead of it’s domestic release on June 22, 2018.

‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ is currently playing in theaters everywhere.

Saoirse Ronan Is Charming And Funny In The “Lady Bird” Trailer

A24

With the release of the new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s directing debut, the touching mother-daughter tale “Lady Bird”, it looks like Ronan might be headed for another Oscar nomination.

The trailer stars with Christine “Lady Bird” (Ronan) and her mother (played by Laurie Metcalf) having an argument over where Christine will live and pursue her studies. “I hate California. I want to go to the East Coast. I want to go where culture is like New York,” Christine says. In a sudden but hilarious moment, the frustrated Lady Bird jumps out of the car in protest as Metcalf shrieks in horror.

That is just one in the many comically offbeat scenes in the trailer and what looks like an entertaining and charming film.

“Lady Bird” emerged as one of the early awards contenders after it’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival last week, which bodes well for the talented 34 year old actress/filmmaker Gerwig, who also wrote the film.

Set in 2002 Sacramento, the comedy-drama also stars Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Lois Smith, and is scheduled to fly into theaters on November 10.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.
