It seems that online retail giant Amazon went to SXSW and did a shopping spree of it’s own. As reported by Variety today, the e-commerce site acquired streaming rights to 40 feature films that played at SXSW Film Festival.

It is a massive haul considering that $1.9 million will be paid upfront for each film, which includes the 2017 Grand Jury Award winner “Most Beautiful Island”.

The titles were acquired through Film Festival Stars initiative, the same program under which Amazon acquired 15 films from Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, both of which designed to bolster Amazon Video Direct.

Here’s the 40 titles picked up by Amazon:

“Inheritance,” “Assholes,” “Win By Fall,” “Signature Move,” “Like Me,” “Sylvio,” “Satan Said Dance,” “Paa Joe & The Lion,” “A Bad Idea Gone Wrong,” “Maineland,” “The Cloud Forest,” “The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin,” “Bad Lucky Goat,” “Bill Frisell, A Portrait,” “Divine Divas,” “Pornocracy,” “Tormentero,” “Inflame,” “The Secret Life of Lance Letscher,” “I Am Another You,” “Most Beautiful Island,” “A Critically Endangered Species,” “Dara Ju,” “Spettacolo,” “Ramblin’ Freak,” “DRIB,” “Two Pigeons,” “Going to Brazil,” “Daphne,” “Meatball Machine Kodoku,” “The Honor Farm,” “The Light of the Moon,” “Flesh and Blood,” “Fits and Starts,” “La Barracuda,” “MFA,” “California Dreams,” “Easy Living,” “Let There Be Light,” and “Infinity Baby.”

New Red Band “Baywatch” Trailer Is Hilarious

Baywatch

By Creative Media Times

Paramount Pictures dropped the latest trailer for “Baywatch” and looks more like a spoof than a reboot of the classic TV series. Extremely good-looking people are still there running in slow motion, except this time with an extra surface of rude and super lewd R-rated comedy.

It is also more action-packed than previous trailers of the move we have seen previously, which suggests the studio is finally rolling out is promo blitz two weeks before the film’s release. If luck is on Paramount’s side, this could be this year’s surprise hit “21 jump street” or the start of a franchise ala “Hangover”, both of which attracted frat guys and sorority girls into the summer’s multiplexes.

It helps that the film is directed by Seth Gordon, the man who turned modestly budgeted Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief into certified $100 million hits, and stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, who both attract sizable following.

Also starring, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Jon Bass, Hannibal Buress, and Rob Huebel, Baywatch is scheduled for release on May 25.

‘Artemis’, Andy Weir’s follow-up to ‘The Martian’

By Creative Media Times

Crown Publishing Photo

Fans of Andy Weir’s “The Martian” should be happy to know that, not only will his follow up “Artemis” be released later this year, but the movie rights was already picked up by Fox, as Deadline reports.

Artemis novel is scheduled to be released on Nov.14, in North America and is already available for pre-order Amazon. This was announced by Crown Publishing on its website, which also included description of the novel as follows:

An adrenaline-charged crime caper that features smart, detailed world-building based on real science and the charm that makes Weir’s writing so irresistible, Artemis introduces a protagonist every bit as memorable as The Martian’s Mark Watney: Jasmine Bashara, aka Jazz. Jazz is just another too-smart, directionless twentysomething, chafing at the constraints of her small town and dreaming of a better life. Except the small town happens to be named Artemis—and it’s the first and only city on the moon.

Weir’s debut novel “The Martian”, which follows the survival efforts of Mark Watney after he becomes stranded alone on Mars, was a huge breakthrough for the novelist. The book received generally positive reviews and sold 3 million copies.

But it wasn’t until Twentieth Century Fox optioned the rights to the film that the novel attracted broader recognition. Directed by Ridley Scott, that film starred Matt Damon, made more than $600 million at the boxoffice, and received seven academy award nominations.

“Hellboy” Reboot In The Works

David Harbour by Gordon Correll

By Creative Media Times

A new “Hellboy” is currently in development, but this time, without director Guillermo del Toro, who directed the first two movies. According to Variety, Neil Marshall of “Game of Thrones” is attached to take over directing duties, while “David Harbour” is in talks to star.

This news might not be a complete surprise to some. In an interview with Screen Rant last year, Ron Perlman, who originally played the character, admitted that making Hellboy 3 is unlikely to happen, or at least not with him on it.

The first ‘Hellboy’ came out in 2004 to minor boxoffice success but developed a strong cult following. The success of Del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” a couple of years later provided the director enough influence to push forward the production of a sequel in 2008, “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, which was a slight financial improvement.

‘Hellboy’ is based on the graphic novels of the same name by writer/artist Mike Mignola who also broke the news in his facebook site. In the film, the character is a well-meaning demon superhero brought into this world by Nazis who want to unleash the “Seven Gods of Chaos” but raised to became a superhero to do battle with supernatural enemies.

David Harbour is the current lead character Police Chief Jim Hopper in the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’ which recently won TV Show of the Year at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

The Black Widow has a dangerous plan to take them down, and it may require the heroes of the Marvel Universe to cross a line they never thought they would. Helmed by Derek Landy, writer of the blockbuster, award-winning Skulduggery Pleasant series, with art by Joshua Cassara (New Avengers) it’s time for Natasha Romanoff to unite the next generation of Marvel heroes against the oncoming forces of Hydra with SECRET EMPIRE: UPRISING.

“One of the overriding themes in SECRET EMPIRE: UPRISING is for the heroes not to make the same old mistakes all over again,” said Landy. “The Champions, for instance, are looking for non-violent ways to stop violent opponents, and that ethos spills over into Uprising. How do a bunch of super-powered kids, brimming with optimism, factor in the Black Widow’s dark agenda when confronted with Captain America’s role in the Hydra takeover of America? Intense Official Trailer For Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’

Warner Bros.

By Creative Media Times

The official trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” was released by Warner Bros. on Friday and it is both harrowing and epic. Written and directed by Nolan, the movie concerns the mass rescue and evacuation of allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, France during World War II, where they were stranded and surrounded by the German army.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill referred to the events in France “a colossal military disaster”. This line can be heard narrating the opening scenes, and quickly followed by ticking of the clock as we watch the allied troops under duress on land, air and sea.

The trailer is haunting, beautifully shot, and captured the intensity and chaos in Dunkirk. This all reminds us that the acclaimed filmmaker is not slowing down on making such large scale epic films, and that can only be a good thing. Nolan has put his heart and soul into this: in addition to his star-studded cast, he’s recruited 6,000 extras for the film. IMAX cameras were also hand-held by cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema for long durations, a painful yet pioneering practice on a feature film.

Dunkirk hits theaters July 21, similar to Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and ‘Inception,’ which were both released in July.
