Disney has found its lead for its upcoming Little Mermaid live action film, as singer Halle Bailey has just been cast as Ariel,” Walt Disney Studios announced Wednesday.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall said in a statement.
“Dream come true…” Halle tweeted with an illustration of a black version of Ariel.
Other characters currently in talks for the movie are star Awkwafina (“Crazy Rich Asians”) as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay (“Wonder”) as Flounder and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
The film comes after the latest in a string of live-action reboots from Disney. The studio has so far has had mixed results: though Dumbo, release last March was met with muted critical and boxoffice results, this summer’s Aladdin has been a certified boxoffice hit.
The studio is also set to release Lion King this month, followed by Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in October.
The Little Mermaid release date is yet to be announced.
